Behind the scenes

Winning the race is not enough. The house grades your beast and your bet — and if you placed nothing right, you leave empty-handed, even after crossing the line in front.
The scale was shown to me once, and from a distance. Here it is anyway.
Three stars: your beast wins and your three picks come home in the right order. Two stars: your beast wins, and at least one of your picks places. One star: one pick places, but your beast isn't first.
And then there's the case nobody saw coming: if none of your picks places, that's zero stars — even if your own beast crushed the race.
I asked whether it was a mistake. I was told it was not, and that they had other things to do.
The lesson: running fast isn't enough here. You also have to have been right. This is a betting game, and the boss will not let anyone forget it.
